Sony makes 3D price pledge on games and films

By Adrian Weckler

Sony has pledged not to raise prices for 3D films or video games sold in Ireland. The pledge was made jointly by the country manager for Sony Ireland, Sushil Teji, and the managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Ireland, Niall O’Hanrahan.

The electronics giant is to launch two 3D television sets onto the Irish market this month. Its range of 3D movies and video games will hit shop shelves in the late summer.

Both of Sony’s 3D television models will be wi-fi enabled and use LED technology. The sets will also be ‘full’ HD, at a resolution of 1080p. The 40inch set will cost €1,600, while the 46-inch set will cost €2,200. Both will be available by the end of May.

O’Hanrahan said that all current Playstation 3 models would receive a firmware update in September, enabling them to play 3D Blu-ray DVDs. In addition, almost all Sony Blu-ray players currently being sold will be updatable to allow them play the discs.

Teji said that Sony Vaio computers would incorporate 3D technology by the end of this year. He also said that the company’s range of compact digital cameras would ‘‘soon’’ incorporate the ability to shoot pictures and videos in 3D.
