Meteor to double its 3G mobile broadband service

Meteor is to roll out a 3G mobile broadband service of “up to’‘ 14.4 megabits per-second (Mbs). The service, which is twice the speed of mobile operators’ current 3G broadband offerings, is now live in Galway.
Elaine Robinson, the company’s head of product development, said that the operator planned to extend the high speeds across its Irish 3G broadband network. “Right now, we’re seeing reliable speeds of ten megabits on our Galway network,” she said. “We’ve been conducting trials of higher speeds and this is the first step in rolling that out.”

The service has also been upgraded to include a 6 Mbs upload speed, the fastest upload speed of any mobile service on the market.

The upload speed is based on High Speed Uplink Packet Access technology. The new service will be accessible on the operator’s higher speed broadband dongles, Huawei’s 180 model.

Both 3 Ireland and Vodafone are expected to follow suit in the coming months.
